The Barbican Centre’s new cinemas are to open with a new season of films called Step Into The Dark, which will run from November 2 to December 9.

As well as the recently refurbished Barbican Cinema 1 –  which has 288 seats – the Barbican now boasts cinemas 2 and 3, each of which has 156 seats.

The centre will hold the six-week season of films, which has five separate strands dedicated to exploring the themes of “dystopia, the sublime and the surreal” in cinema.

Part of the season entitled Seven Deadly Sins will invite filmmakers like Sam Taylor Wood, Mike Leigh and Richard Ayoade, to select a film they feel represents one of the seven sins.

Other parts of the Step Into The Dark season are Everyday I Have the Blues – exploring jazz and blues on screen – Dark Heart of Fairy Tales – about subversive fairy tales – Suppression/Expression, which will showcase films involved in the culture of resistance and Silent Horror and Live Music, including three German Expressionist silent horrors.

Managing director of the Barbican Sir Nicholas Kenyon commented: “Our film offer allows our audiences to delve further into our programme of exhibitions, music, theatre and dance performances. Barbican Cinemas 2 and 3, with their street level presence, will also become the local cinemas for local audiences, showing the best new releases of the moment.”
