Cate Blanchett to play Evil Stepmother in Romanek’s Cinderella –

Romanek will work from a screenplay by About a Boy director Chris Weitz, who adapted an initial draft of the script by Devil Wears Prada writer Aline Brosh McKenna. Elysium producer Simon Kinberg bringing the project to the screen.

The Cinderella live-action project has been in the offing at Disney headquarters since May 2010 after the studio funded Tim Burton’s commercially successful reworking of Lewis C. Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, which starred Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

First released in 1950, Cinderella was Disney’s twelfth animated film. In the original film she is voiced by the late Ilene Woods. The Disney version of the character was based on the French version of the tale by Charles Perrault, written in 1634 in Histoires ou Contes du Temps Passé. On a budget of $2.9 million, it made an estimated $85 million at the box office.

The 43-year-old Australian actress next appears in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, in theaters Dec. 14. She also has twoTerrence Malick films and a Woody Allen project in the pipeline, and recently joined the star-studded cast of George Clooney’s The Monuments Men
