James Murdoch to speak at Edinburgh
James Murdoch, News Corp. topper and chairman of U.K. paybox BSkyB, is to deliver the flagship MacTaggart lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival this summer, 20 years after his father, Rupert Murdoch, stood on the podium.
At the time, Murdoch Sr., who had recently launched pay TV satcaster Sky Television, denounced what he regarded as the elitism of British TV. Now BSkyB, which News Corp. controls, is one of the giants of U.K. broadcasting.
James Murdoch said: “Our industry is so clearly at a turning point that now is a good time to consider the right way forward for the industry, for regulators and, most importantly, for our customers.”
The MacTaggart is always keenly anticipated, but having Murdoch on board during such a critical period for the TV and related industries makes this year’s lecture especially interesting.
