The film will be the second in the rebooted franchise after Wyatt directed Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011. Despite it being only his second film, it pulled in $481 million at the box office.
Funding studio 20th Century Fox want Dawn of the Planet of the Apes to be released on 23 May 2014, a date which Wyatt believes to be untenable.
His decision seems likely to be regarded as drastic by many at Fox, who green-lit Dawn of the Planet of the Apes after agreeing a script written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.
The first film starred James Franco and Freida Pinto as young scientists and Andy Serkis as Caesar the ape.
Wyatt’s debut film was 2008 drama-thriller The Escapist, starring Dominic Cooper and Joseph Fiennes.
He has been tipped to direct Londongrad, which stars Michael Fassbender as Alexander Litvinenko, the former KGB operative who was poisoned with polonium-210 in a London restaurant in 2006.
