Tony Cook – One To Watch

Tony was born and raised in South London and, after acting for the big and small screen has turned his attention to producing; his short film Three was nominated for best comedy at the Portobello Film Festival. Having recently completed work on British horror Airborne, Tony is working on Superman fan movie Superman: Requiem and fantasy thriller Welcome to Purgatory, which he has also co-written.

What kind of projects attract you?
I like a script to lead me and be two steps ahead of my expectations. As I am an actor first and foremost, I look for strong character arcs and roles that would attract me.

You can produce the film of your dreams. What and who would that entail?
We are in pre-production on the film of my dreams, Welcome To Purgatory, that I have co-written with Marcus Ako. We are approaching various ‘wish list’ members to join the project. It is a Joss Whedon inspired sci-fi trilogy, being produced my Gene Fallaize, Marcus Ako and myself. I will also be playing Taylor, one of the lead characters.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given as a producer?
I have been guided as a producer by [fellow producer] Gene Fallaize, who said ‘never ask a member of your cast or crew to do something that you wouldn’t be willing to do yourself’. A producer builds from the ground up; you have to believe you can make a castle when you don’t even have any bricks.

Tell us the most significant moment in your career so far?
I woke up to a phone call from Gene that started with ‘Do you want to make a Superman film?’ It has been just over a year and we are now in production shooting Superman: Requiem. It has been made possible by the huge support from fans, cast, crew, and our families and friends.

You’ll die happy when…
When I know I have created a legacy for my family and friends. I owe my best friend Daniel Joseph and my brother Michael an Aston Martin DB9 each, and a cottage in the New Forest for my parents. I want to set up a safety net for my niece, Caitlyn, so she can go after her dreams without having to worry about ‘what if’. Seeing my girlfriend, Lori MacFadyen, getting her Oscar for Best Lead, and Marcus Ako and Gene Fallaize earning the Best Picture Oscar. I have always said my aim is to earn my first Oscar before I am 30… only 6 years left! No pressure!
