Director & Screenplay Javier Fuentes-Leon Stars Tatiana Astengo, Manolo Cardona Opens August 6 (on DVD from September 27)

Having already won the World Cinema Audience Award in the Dramatic category at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Undertow is on its way to becoming a festival favourite. It’s the debut feature of Peruvian director Fuentes-León and tells the story of forbidden gay love in a Catholic Peruvian fishing village. A ghostly twist provides an interesting premise but it suffers somewhat from the ‘looks and pained expressions’ of acting. Still, the breathtaking scenery does provide some picturesque respite from what is otherwise a rather underwhelming and at times insipid affair. 2 stars
