Act of Killing Distributed Free in Indonesia – movieScope

Joshua Oppenheimer’s astonishing documentary The Act of Killing has been winning critical plaudits from all corners for its unflinching look at former Indonesian death squad leaders, who are tasked with recreating their most heinous crimes on camera.

Because these men still hold great power in the country, a theatrical release has been deemed in possible. But distributors Drafthouse Films have announced that they will make the film available as a free digital download exclusively for the people of Indonesia from September 30.

“Joshua Oppenheimer’s film is a groundbreaking work that demands to be seen and its most essential audience is the people of Indonesia,” said Drafthouse Films founder Tim League. “We are deeply impassioned to assist in the quest to break the government’s near 40-year silence of these atrocities.”
