Saoirse Ronan is the frontrunner to play Cinderella in Mark Romanek’s live-action remake of the iconic Disney animation.

The 18-year-old Irish actress will compete for the role with Swedish star Alicia Vikander, best known for her role in Swedish TV drama Andra Avenyn and the 2012 adaptation of Anna Karenina, and British actress Gabriella Wilde , who is due to star in the remake of Brian De Palma’s Carrie, directed by Boys Don’t Cry director Kimberly Peirce.

Director Mark Romanek will shortly be holding screen tests to find his perfect heroine, and is reported to be impressed with Ronan since she made a name for herself in 2007′s Atonement going on to star in Joe Wright’s Hanna and Peter Weir’s The Way Back.

Chris Weitz has penned the script based on Charles Perrault’s classic fairytale, while Simon Kinberg is producing.

It is not yet known whether the new film will stay faithful to the 1950 Disney classic, in which orphaned Cinderella is made a slave in her own home by her stepmother and stepsisters.

The actress chosen to play Cinderella will star opposite Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett, who has already been cast as evil stepmother Lady Tremaine.
