Berlinale Forum to screen 41 films, with 22 world premieres – movieScope

European cinema is prominent in this year’s programme, featuring debut filmmakers from Georgia, Germany, Croatia and Greece.

Films to gain an early buzz include La plaga (The Plague), the debut picture from Spanish director Neus Ballús, which follows five poverty-stricken people of different origins on the outskirts of Barcelona.

Also screening is Joseph Borgman’s debut The Weight of Elephants, a Danish–New Zealand co-production that follows a ten-year-old boy who uses his imagination to escape everyday life in small town New Zealand.

America weighs in with three productions, including Matt Porterfield’s I Used to Be Darker about a young woman from Northern Ireland who seeks refuge with distant family on the east coast of the United States.
