iPhone apps for Filmmakers: issue 20

With Apple’s iPhone and iPad due for major upgrades in 2011 in the face of increasing hardware and software challenges, it is undoubtedly their huge selection of apps that will ensure they retain the edge. Here we profile some of the latest productivity apps for filmmakers.

Doddle (Reference)
The days of cumbersome printed production guides may be coming to an end. Doddle is an international mobile production guide that allows film, television, audio and video professionals to create and distribute interactive call-sheets from the convenience of their mobile device. Although currently limited to the USA, Doddle have plans to roll out their free app worldwide during 2011, making the search for and communication with vendors, crew, talent, locations, film offices, freelancers and service providers quick, easy and 100 per cent digital.

Save The Cat (Story Development)
Based on the best-selling books and story structure software by the late Blake Snyder, Save The Cat is designed to help writers create and update their screenplay or novel storylines on the fly. The app offers the same methodologies, tactics and tips of the popular book series and presents them via an easy to navigate screen interface. On the plus side, the app is very easy to understand and use, dividing each screenplay into 15 Beats over the classic 3-Act story structure made famous by other screenwriting teachers. Unfortunately, however, it offers no script formatting features; to get your story from concept to structured screenplay, you’ll need a dedicated industry standard desktop formatting application like Movie Magic Screenwriter 6 or one of the excellent mobile apps like Celtx, ScriptsPro or Screenplay.
Requires: iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad with iOS 2.2.1 or later.
Price: £14.99/ $19.99

Scene Study (Acting)
Designed to help actors learn their lines for theatre or film productions, Scene Study is a smart app with a deceptively simple but powerful purpose. Using a system of record and playback, Scene Study frees actors from the need to carry a paper version of their script during rehearsals by allowing them to actively participate in the scene by speaking their lines as prompted by the playback of their recorded cue lines. Setup is relatively straight forward. Once you’ve recorded your lines and those of the other characters, you’re ready to start rehearsing. Just mute the character you want to rehearse during playback and enjoy the closest thing to your own virtual (and portable) study partner.
Requires: iPhone, iPod touch and iPad with iOS 4.0 or later

Named after legendary ASC cinematographer Gregg Toland, TOLAND combines a calculator and logging interface to track your photographic choices as you make them.
